It is with heavy heart that the world either woke up to or went to bed hearing the breaking news of one of our most iconic artists to grace this generation lose his 18 month battle to cancer. We are grieving over the recent death of David Bowie.
However, through our grief, I was inspired to wake up this morning (Australian Eastern Time) to a flood of social media posts expressing sincere admiration for the gifts David Bowie bestowed onto the world. Every post mentioned how his music, iconic fashion style and films roles impacted the lives of millions. And from these shared memories we now celebrate the wonderous achievements from a great artist.
So, what made David Bowie so influential?
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what makes Bowie so influential to millions of admirers, but what it ultimately boils down to is David’s fearlessness. He was brave enough to be different, to question life and search for the answers himself, to change society’s idea of ‘the norm’ and to unapologetically express his personal viewpoint of the world.
If you didn’t get the chance to visit the David Bowie exhibit at Melbourne’s ACMI, I’m sorry. It was AMAZING! The exhibit showcasedBowie’s most influential and breakthrough moments throughout his career. From his early days as a sketch artist to becoming an androgynous super hero (literally and figuratively), the exhibit examined the artist, the persona, the man of David Bowie. It was wonderful!
Though we are mourning our lost, we must also remember to celebrate the time he had with David Bowie. As one social media post reminded me, “we must remember that we had the opportunity to live in a time with David Bowie.” How true that is! We received the gift of experiencing his artistic talent. And what a talent he truly was.
He will be missed, yet his influence will remain in our hearts and minds for years to come. Thank you for your gifts, David! R.I.P.
